We must act now on Zim - Zuma

    24/11/2008 11:40 - (SA)

Johannesburg - The humanitarian situation in Zimbabwe has gone beyond a wait-and-see approach, African National Congress president Jacob Zuma said on Monday.

Following a meeting with the elders' delegation who were refused entry into Zimbabwe, Zuma said the ANC would send representatives to Zimbabwe to met with Zanu-PF and the two Movement for Democratic Change factions.

“The situation has just gone beyond a situation where we can say ‘let us wait and see’. We have got to act and act now.”

Zuma said the elders delegation - former US president Jimmy Carter, former UN secretary-general Kofi Annan and rights advocate Graca Machel - believed the situation in Zimbabwe was “very bad”.

“They believe that things could collapse.”

He said they had planned to go to Zimbabwe for humanitarian reasons. The refusal to allow them entry was an “unfortunate act”.

“It does give an unfortunate picture.”

Following the meeting with Zuma, the elders went into a meeting with President Kgalema Motlanthe.

Prima zaak dat Zuma dat zo zegt, Mbeki hoorde je nooit. Ben ook wel benieuwd hoe Motlanthe tegenover deze kwestie staat?

    Situation in Zim may ‘implode’

    24/11/2008 21:59 - (SA)

Johannesburg - President Kgalema Motlanthe warned on Monday that the situation in neighbouring Zimbabwe “may implode and collapse” and announced a new round of talks to help resolve the crisis.

The comments - some of the strongest yet by South Africa - came as a cholera epidemic which has killed hundreds of Zimbabweans, spilled across the border into South Africa.

Officials say Zimbabwe's political and economic collapse caused the outbreak.

In the border town of Musina, about 230 Zimbabweans are said to apply for asylum permits every day.

Motlanthe and ANC leader Jacob Zuma expressed grave concern at Zimbabwe's deepening humanitarian crisis.

“Unless this root cause of the political absence of a legitimate government is solved, the situation will get worse and may implode and collapse,” Motlanthe said.

Dit is toch al weer een hele andere wind die er waait dan onder Mbeki. Goede zaak.

Eerst geloven en dan zul je het zien :)
