Tsitsikamma's suspension bridge will re-open in May 2009
Date: 2008-09-17
The boardwalk to the very popular suspension bridge at the Tsitsikamma National Park was damaged by a fire in December 2007 and consequently the hiking trail that includes the bridge, had to be closed.
Management immediately started with the process to rebuild the boardwalk, but the process has been delayed considerably by an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) that had to be done for the construction of an additional three bridges.
The process was completed and Park Manager Darren Claasen said that he hopes that the EIA will be approved by the end of the month. “Once approval is granted, the tender process will start and construction should commence early in January 2009. If all goes to plan, the suspension bridge will be re-opened mid May next year.”
Claassen said that the walkway to the bridge is open until the area of Kerneels-se-Klip. “We know that this is a very popular route and apologise for any inconvenience caused, but hopefully our visitors will try some of the other beautiful hikes for the time being.”
